IP mark


IP is the abbreviation of Ingress Protection. IP level is the protection level for foreign body intrusion of electrical equipment shell. The source is IEC 60529, which was also adopted as the national standard of the United States in 2004.

In this standard, the format of IP grade is IPXX for the protection of foreign bodies in the case of electrical equipment, where XX is two Arabic numerals. The first numeral indicates the level of contact protection and foreign object protection, and the second numeral indicates the level of waterproof protection. The specific level of protection can be referred to in the table below.



The following are the different levels of testing:

Dustproof grade

IP1 x

The sphere diameter is 50 mm, which should not be fully entered into the detector for protecting 50 mm diameter and larger solid exosome.

IP2 x

Protection 12.5mm diameter and larger solid exosome detector, sphere diameter 12.5mm, should not be fully entered

IP3 x

Protection of 2.5mm diameter and larger solid exosome detector, sphere diameter of 2.5mm, should not be fully entered

IP4 x

Protect 1.0 mm diameter and larger solid exosome detector, sphere diameter is 1.0 mm, should not be fully entered

IP5 x

Dust protection cannot completely prevent dust from entering, but the amount of dust entering will not cause damage to equipment.

IP6 x

Dust should not enter the enclosed cabinet at low pressure of 20 millibars


Waterproof grade (second X)

(1) IPx 1

Method Name: Vertical drip test

Test equipment: drip test device

Sample placement: According to the normal working position of the sample, the sample is placed on a rotating sample table of 1 r/min. The distance from the top of the sample to the drip nozzle is not more than 200 mm.

Test conditions: drip volume is 10. 5 mm/min

Duration: 10 min

(2) IPx 2

Method Name: Inclination 15 degree drip test

Test equipment: drip test device

Sample placement: Make one surface of the sample at an angle of 15 degrees to the vertical line, and the distance from the top of the sample to the dropper is not more than 200 mm. After each experiment, change one side to another, four times.

Test conditions: drip volume is 30. 5 mm/min

Duration: 4 x 2. 5 min (total 10 min)

(3) IPx 3

Method Name: Leaching test


Test methods:

A. Pendulum type sprinkler test

Test Equipment: Swing Tube Sprinkler Test Device

Sample placement: Select the appropriate radius of the pendulum tube, so that the height of the sample table is in the position of the pendulum tube diameter. Place the sample on the sample table, so that the distance from the top to the sample nozzle is not more than 200 mm, and the sample table does not rotate.

Test conditions: The water flow is calculated by the number of nozzles in the swing pipe, and each hole is 0. 07 L/min, spraying water from the sprinkler holes in 60 degree arcs on both sides of the swing tube midpoint sprays to the sample. The sample is placed in the center of the semi-circle of the pendulum tube. The pendulum tube oscillates 60 degrees along both sides of the vertical line, totaling 120 degrees. Test time: continuous water shower for 10 minutes

B. Sprinkler sprinkler test

Test equipment: hand-held sprinkler test device

Sample placement: the parallel distance between the top of the test and the nozzle of the hand-held nozzle is between 300 mm and 500 mm.

Test Conditions: Baffles with balanced weights should be installed during the test, and the water flow rate is 10 L/min.

Test time: Calculated according to the surface area of the tested sample shell, 1 minute per square meter (excluding installation area), minimum 5 minutes

(4) IPx 4

Method Name: Splash test


Test methods:

A. Pendulum splashing test

Test equipment and sample placement: same as IPX 3 a above;

Test conditions: Except for the aforementioned conditions, the sprinkler area is the same as that of section a of IPX 3 mentioned above, and the sprinkler area is the sprinkler water from the sprinkler holes in the 90 degree arc on both sides of the swing pipe midpoint. The sample is placed in the center of the semi-circle of the pendulum tube. The pendulum tube oscillates 180 degrees along both sides of the vertical line, totaling about 360 degrees. Each oscillation (2 x 360 degrees) is about 12 seconds

Test time: same as the above IPX 3 a (i.e. 10 minutes).

B. Sprinkler splash test

Test equipment and sample placement: same as IPX 3 B above;

Test Conditions: Remove the baffle with balancing weight on the equipment, and the rest are the same as section B of IPX 3 mentioned above.

Test time: same as the above IPX 3 b, i.e. 1 min per square meter (excluding installation area) and 5 min at least according to the surface area of the tested sample shell

(5) IPx 5

Method Name: Spray test

Test equipment: The nozzle's inner diameter is 6. 3mm

Test conditions: the distance between the test sample and the nozzle is 2. 5-3 m, water flow 12. 5 L/min (750 L/h)

Test time: According to the surface area of the tested sample shell, 1 min per square metre (excluding installation area) and at least 3 min per square metre

(6) IPx 6

Method Name: Intense sprinkler test;

Test equipment: The nozzle's inner diameter is 12. 5 mm

Test conditions: the distance between the test sample and the nozzle is 2. 5m-3m, flow rate of 100 L/min (6000 L/h)

Test time: According to the surface area of the tested sample shell, it is 1 min per square meter (excluding installation area) and at least 3 min per square meter.

(7) IPx 7

Method Name: Short-term immersion test

Test equipment and test conditions: immersion tank. The size of the sample should make the distance from the bottom of the sample to the water surface at least 1m after it is put into the immersion tank. The distance from the top of the sample to the water surface is at least 0. 15m

Test time: 30 min

(8) IPx 8

Method Name: Continuous diving test;

Test equipment, test conditions and test time: It is agreed by both suppliers and buyers that the severity of test equipment should be higher than that of IPX 7.
